Colin Powell, The Power of association

Posted by Brandon Dillon on March 20, 2014

I was listening to some of my new Life Leadership CDs the other day and Dan Hawkins was talking about this story and its so powerful I had to write it all down mainly because it helps me understand again how important association is for me and should be for you and your family. See what Mr. Powell has to say.

The Power of Association is too real: “The less you associate with some people, the more your life will improve. Any time you tolerate mediocrity in others, it increases your mediocrity. An important attribute in successful people is their impatience with negative thinking and negative acting people. As you grow, your associates will change. Some of your friends will not want you to go on. They will want you to stay where they are. Friends that don’t help you climb will want you to crawl. Your friends will stretch your vision or choke your dream. Those that don’t increase you will eventually decrease you.

Consider this: Never receive counsel from unproductive people. Never discuss your problems with someone incapable of contributing to the solution, because those who never succeed themselves are always first to tell you how. Not everyone has a right to speak into your life. You are certain to get the worst of the bargain when you exchange ideas with the wrong person. Don’t follow anyone who is not going anywhere. With some people you spend an evening: with others you invest it. Be careful where you stop to inquire for directions along the road of life. Wise is the person who fortifies his life with the right friendships. If you run with wolves, you will learn how to howl, but if you associate with eagles, you will learn how to soar to great heights.

“A mirror reflects a man’s face, but what he is really like is shown by the kind of friends he chooses.” The simple but true fact of life is that you become like those with whom you closely associate – for the good and the bad. Note: Be not mistaken. This is applicable to family as well as friends”.

Socrates & the Test of Three

Posted by Brandon Dillon on February 13, 2013

I was recently at a Life seminar and they were talking about Socrates and his test of three. Socrates was considered the greatest mind in his time and was even told that he was the smartest man in all of Greece. The reason for that is because he always asked questions instead of just telling everyone all the things he knew. With that little part alone how many of us could work on that? Do you know some one that is always ready to tell you everything or even if they are not called upon in circle of people they are the first to give a answer even when something is directed to another person?

They can seem very rude right? if you don’t know some one like this, it might be you! =) hopefully not =)

So this man approaches Socrates and says. Socrates I have something to tell you I just heard about one of your students. Socrates pauses for a moment then says to the gentlemen ok you may tell me but first let me ask you three questions about what it is you want to tell me. The man says ok.

First question, is what you want to tell me something good? The man thought for a minuet, no its actually not good. Ok Socrates says that’s fine lets try question two.

Is what you want to tell me the Truth? The man said no I am not sure if its true or not I just heard it. ok that’s fine Socrates says lets see about the last question.

Is what you want to tell me useful? No the man said I guess its not useful.

Socrates says so if I understand this right, you were about to tell me something that is not good, not true and not useful? Why tell me at all?

The man was defeated and ashamed and said no more.

That story ends in some situations with the phrase. And that’s why Socrates never found out about Plato and his wife’s affair. But if you take that situation yes it may not have been good information but it was sure True, and useful to Socrates. But what this man wanted to tell Socrates was just Gossip, how many of you would be happen with a world with out gossip?

Then use this the next time your going to tell a story a information to a friend or someone at work about so and so. Even if what someone is doing may not be right unless you can correct it or at best warn someone about a potential issue they might fall in to because of that person don’t talk about it.

Dale Carnegie talks about this in his all time great best selling book how to Win friends and influence people. He starts off with 3 principles to always do the three as he calls them. Accept, Approve and appreciate. The reason he starts with everyone needs to accept approve and appreciate others for what ever small item they do is because most everyone is ignoring it and doing what he says next on a daily basis.

The next principle he follows with is a don’t do statement, because most people take this to be their job or personal hobby most times and that’s do not criticize, condemn or complain.

Think about when you heard more accepting, approving and appreciating of someone vs criticizing condemning or complaining? its very rare to find the three As used its almost always the three Cs that are in place in our world today, and it doesn’t get us very far at all.

The next time you hear someone start talking about someone or something ask your self these questions and also go out of your way to find something to accept and approve and appreciate of someone everyday, you will see some amazing things with that, and lets everyone stop criticizing, condemning and complaining. The world will be a much quieter place if we take Socrates principles and Dale Carnegies and use them and share them with others.

I highly recommend you read Dale Carnegies book How to win friends and influence people, its one I read several times a year to remind my self not to fall in to the gossip and rumor trap and to think of how I can accept, approve and appreciate someone that day.

Success is yours if your willing to work for it.

sincerely

Financial Common Sense Part 2

Posted by Brandon Dillon on November 15, 2012

Wow Thanksgiving is almost here!! Its amazing how fast time can go 2012 is almost over!! How close are you to hitting your goals you had set for this year, or this quarter or just this week even! I hope your getting there and if not, lets reset and change something and do it again.

Hopefully you have gone though some of the books and principles I listed in part one of this article. What I wanted to cover today is something very basic but so vitally important to you financial success whether your making $30,000 a year or $300,000 per month!  Its what every successful person and business does with regards to their finances. So if your in trouble financially this is the very first step you want to do.

You can get more in-depth detail from our Finance Pack http://www.the-life-business.com/Shopping/tabid/63/ProdID/1709/language/en-US/Default.aspx

But the first thin you need to do is know exactly where your at with incoming and out going cash flow. Learning to write a balance sheet will help you with this as Robert Kiyosaki teaches this in his books too. But you need to know exactly where you are Net, not Gross. We need to work with exactly what you have coming in to your hands every week or two weeks or month.

Then we need to look at exactly what you spend every month. Now this one gets tricky and so people don’t self deceive them selves what you can do is use your smart phone and a app or a basic small note pad and pen to track everything you spend. if its more then 25 cents write it down or put it in your app. Do this for a month then look at it and see if what it says is as accurate as to what you were thinking it was.

This is the very first step to creating wealth in your life and its a non negotiable, if you don’t manage it then you never will, but if you do then the moon is the limit on what you can achieve.

Keep reading and learning, the Richest Man in Babylon is a great Book to start you on the right track of financial principles, its about 85 pages and the stories are more relevant now then they were 4000 years ago. So many people are selling them selves as slaves to interest and bad finances just as they did back then, except its a bit more comfy now, which is bad thing. There is no motivation to get out as there once was unless you have this realization that I want better for my life.

I hope you do! God bless and till next time when I write about what Thanksgiving is really all about and how it almost never was!

=)

Financial Common Sense Part 1

Posted by Brandon Dillon on October 9, 2012

Its been a little while and I apologize for that, going to start making sure I put up at least one every other week if not every week. So stay tuned for more =)

I have been going back though my Robert kiyosaki books and want to start focusing on personal finances for a while, 1 because my views on money really were off by a long shot and in the last 7 years they have changed and grown dramatically.  Through the help of reading and starting to apply some things  that I learned from a few books I am going to break this up in to about 5 parts and list a lot of books that helped me and the rest of the world. Being wealthy is very easy and simple and boring. So its hard for a lot of people because humans do not like boring. We like fast and exciting and the chase, this goes for being in good health and shape too. its little steps over time doing the same thing not really changing anything so its mundane at best.

But finances are so important right now because we have had some major issues in the last 5 years with money at the biggest levels in government and States and at home. Government has printed more money which has inflated our currency supply in the last 6 years then the last 200, its almost tripled. now it don’t take a genius to realize that if I had 100 dollars and you triple the currency supply well now it spends like 33 dollars. So all that money sitting in a 401K or IRA that’s collecting we will just say 8-15% because everyone is different and such. that a loss from inflation of 66% sure don’t add up and that happened almost over night.

So I am going to start with some concepts and reference some books in the hopes that we can have a discussion about it and I hope this information will change your financial situation for the better.

The best books to start off with are;

The Richest Man in Babylon by George S Clayton you can find it here.

http://www.the-life-business.com/Shopping/tabid/63/ProdID/1376/richestmaninbabylonthe.aspx

or at your local book store or Amazon or what ever you shop.

also we have The Maximize your Finances pack which includes the Richest Man in Babylon and 4 Audio Cds on financial management

http://www.the-life-business.com/Shopping/tabid/63/ProdID/1709/language/en-US/Default.aspx

Also Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad, Poor Dad

http://www.the-life-business.com/Shopping/tabid/63/ProdID/14/richdadpoordad.aspx

And also The Cash Flow Quadrant.

http://www.the-life-business.com/Shopping/tabid/63/ProdID/13/cashflowquadrant.aspx

These 4 books are the basics of personal financial management. I will touch on the concepts of each book but get them for your selves or the audios and read or listen to them over and over because finances are one of the most important things to have a handle on out there right now. With the recent bail outs and financial collapse and people losing billions from their retirements and assets tied to the stock market with no control over it other then to wait 10 or 20 years for it to return back to what it was before they lost 50% of it. its time we all knew more about what makes the world run financially, because the need and use of money has been around for thousands of years and its not going away any time soon. So its best to get good at it so your not suffering. Deal?

In Robert kiyosaki’s book the Cash flow Quadrant he talks about the 4 ways of thinking about money and where they come from at the root of a persons beliefs. Much like the 4 personality profiles.

He goes in to detail in the book about the mind set people have developed over the year’s of being programmed by media and our parents and such about how we view money. So its very important to be careful what information you let in to your mind. You will believe anything your told over and over again weather its right or wrong. I personally do not have cable or Satellite TV or watch the news in any facet. I pick and choose what I want my inputs to be. its been about 10 years since I did that. Now when I do catch a commercial or TV show it really makes me sick what I used to tolerate being stuck in my mind. The subconscious is a very powerful thing it can take in so much information and it helps direct us where we want to go. So its vital that you do the programming of it and cut off anything that’s bad or could be harmful to your dreams and goals in life.

I am going to leave it here and will be spending the next few weeks on finances. Get those books from where ever you can. start learning and asking questions.

until next week =)

Mental Fitness Challenge Week 6

Posted by Brandon Dillon on June 6, 2012

Wow week 6 so far in the Mental Fitness Challenge and its awesome, it really is amazing how fast time goes by when your tracking something and not just letting the days blend together. I wanted to stop and write on this chapter from Orrin Woodward’s book Resolved 13 resolutions on Attitude and reframing because I think it so important.

People often think that their situations will cause them to have a good or bad day or good or bad trip or what ever the case may be, but you don’t want to let something that’s out of your control determine weather or not your going to have a positive day. You want to be in complete control if your life don’t you? You want to determine weather or not you have a good day because then your in control and you have the power to change it, if you leave it up to someone or something else then your at the mercy of anything that could happen. Here are some examples from Orrin’s book.

In your mind bank there are two tellers – both of whom are obedient to your every command. One teller is positive and handles positive deposits and positive withdrawals. The other teller is negative and will accept all negative deposits and provide you with negative feedback.

As the owner of your mind, you have complete control over all withdrawals and most deposits. The deposits represent your total experience in life. The withdrawals determine your success and happiness. Obviously, you cant withdraw anything that hasn’t been deposited. (That’s true in the cash bank too, isn’t it?)

Each transaction involves a choice of which teller to use. Confront the negative teller with a problem and he will remind you of how poorly you performed in the past. He will predict failure with your current problem. Confront your positive teller and he will enthusiastically tell you how you successfully dealt with far more difficult problems in the past. He will give you examples of your skill and genius and assure you that you can easily solve this problem. Both tellers are right because: whether you think you can or think you cant – you are right.

Our negative teller is usually screaming at us inside while the positive one is whispering and it takes constant focus and working, to turn down the negative and turn up the positive. But its so important that we pick the positive teller and he Zig Ziglar said we must put in positive to be able to with draw positive. What positive messages are you putting in your brain on a daily basis?  if your not we have a great way for you to get that here Www.Dillonenterprises.com thought a subscription of audio and books chosen by the best leaders in the world and association for challenge groups for the Mental Fitness Challenge and leadership seminars with people who want to move forward in the game of life, not just stand still.

This next story is amazing and it really shows how you can look at the same situation two different ways, and shows the power of choice. This is from Creators Syndicate by Mary Hunt and shows how powerful reframing is.

years ago, my husband and I decided not to replace my car once the lease was up. The plan as that because we work together, we would share his car until we could pay cash for a second car. We figured that would take 6 months or so. I won’t say this new arrangement was enjoyable. Actually I hated it. I felt as if I’d lost my freedom. My wings were clipped; no more spontaneity for me. if I wasn’t being “chaperoned” as a passenger in my husband’s car, I was having to ask permission to borrow it. Let me just put it this way I was not the most pleasant passenger.

we’d been commuting together for about 3 months when I realized that it wasn’t the situation that was intolerable. it was me. I was making myself miserable, not recognizing that the nicest guy in the world was willing to take me anywhere I wanted to go, anytime I wanted to get there. I was ungrateful and horribly self-centered. I needed an attitude, and I needed it quickly.

I decided I had to reframe my thinking because the situation wasn’t going to change anytime soon. I decided that rather than be a pathetic dependent child, I would see my self as a woman of privilege. I have a driver! Every day, I am driving back and forth to work, during which time I am free to chat, read, write, think knit or nap. I never have to wash a car. I don’t have to pump gas into it, insure it, register it or have it “smogged” ( a California thing) – all because my driver is also my maintenance man. Several times a year when I need to go in a different direction, I get a rental car, which allows me to try out some brand-new fancy cars and get my fix behind the wheel. See? A different way of looking at the same situation.

When Hunt listened to her negative voice, she framed the events negatively, when she chose to talk to the positive teller then she got a new perspective.

Have a great day and see you at the top!!

The life you always wanted to live.

Posted by Brandon Dillon on April 29, 2012

Mental Fitness Challenge

This weekend in Columbus Team and Life launched the ground breaking Mental Fitness Challenge to help you live the life you’ve always wanted to live though principles called resolutions. These resolutions are written in detail in Orrin Woodward’s new book called 13 Resolutions for Life in which he has studied 3 very important people in history, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin & Jonathan Edwards. What he found is that the accomplishments these gentleman had were the results of resolutions applied over their lifetime. Just think about it, what would we have today if Benjamin Franklin didn’t resolve to change and come up with his 13 virtue’s? For sure there would be no USA. I don’t want to go in to all the detail here but I am starting the challenge this week and I highly suggest you do the same, I am looking for partners that I can be accountable to and get feed back from that are going to join me on the journey of living the life they’ve always wanted. So lets go! I can help ya do it. Check this video out!

During the next 13 weeks I will be reading the 3 books and listening to the audios in the pack and working with other people who are already committed to doing this with me so they can get their life that they always wanted to live so each week at least once I will be updating you on the books chapters and things I did that week.

See you all in the challenge!

“If I only knew then what I know right now!” How many older people have had these types of thoughts? Orrin Woodward Wins IAB Top Spot

Posted by Brandon Dillon on January 6, 2012

This was just released and Chris Brady posted this and its just amazing so I had to repost it, if your not Following Orrin and Chris blogs on a regular basis your really missing out on things that will help you in your life and get your dreams and goals.

here it is! enjoy! this is amazing!

The Internet Age is a peculiar one in which the small can make themselves appear big. In a world now ablaze with information, we are bombarded by companies and individuals who present themselves as being something more than their actual substance. We also witness the obscure, bizarre, disgruntled, unprincipled, and undisciplined having access to a voice louder than merit would bestow.

This is why it is tremendously refreshing to see that sometimes the exact opposite is true. Occasionally some individual or organization dedicated to excellence and toiling upward far from the hot light of personal glory sometimes receives recognition that is due, and perhaps even over due. This occurs most justly when it has not been sought either directly or indirectly.

Yesterday I received an innocuous email seemingly no different from the other 100 that come in on a daily basis. I opened it with no more anticipation than one opens a phone bill. But as I read through its contents I was warmed by its announcement that my friend and business partner Orrin Woodward had received the prestigious IAB Top Small Business Award Top Leadership Website for 2011. IAB is the International Association of Businesses, a worldwide membership of business owners more than 1 million members strong. For this year’s award, Orrin Woodward was up against the likes of leadership giants such as Jim Collins, John Maxwell, Stephen Covey, Ken Blanchard, Tony Robbins, and Jack Welch, among others. It is an incredible honor just to be among such icons of the industry, but to finish first is absolutely impressive.

Those of us who have worked beside Orrin Woodward these many years and witnessed what he has done in the world of leadership development understand that this award is well deserved. It is indeed exciting to see that others are taking notice of work that is done largely without fanfare or acclaim. As long-time Chairman of the Policy Council of the Team, a leadership development service provider, and (this past year) as one of the principle founders of the LIFE business, dedicated to bringing life-changing leadership training to everyone, Orrin Woodward has “stood tall in the pocket,” working tirelessly for excellence, setting a solid vision for the future, and standing firm upon conviction. In a world where success and timeless principles are under attack from envy and entitlement thinking, Orrin Woodward has remained resolute that a better life can be lived by anyone seeking to take personal responsibility and align their lives with fundamental principles. It is sometimes an unpopular stand to take. People don’t always like to be told the truth. The rules of success are hard and merciless. People often choose to blame the messenger instead of facing the mirror. But Orrin Woodward is not a student of convenience, nor a cohort of mediocrity, but rather a revolutionary for personal developmental excellence and a “no excuse” lifestyle of greatness. Whereas in many cases these would be mere high-sounding words, in the case of Orrin Woodward they are well deserved.

Congratulations Orrin, to you and your entire organization. You have earned it, and yet, it is only the beginning!
